Tanker catches fire in Strait of Hormuz after unknown projectile strike
Tanker hit during Strait of Hormuz transit
A tanker came under attack while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The agency said the vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile, triggering a fire onboard.
UKMTO said it received a third-party report of the incident at 1750 GMT. The agency did not immediately identify the tanker, its flag, planned route or the type of cargo it was carrying.
Crew safe as damage remains unclear
The crew members were reported safe following the incident. However, authorities have yet to establish the full extent of damage suffered by the tanker or determine whether the incident caused any environmental impact.
The identity and nature of the projectile also remain unknown. UKMTO advised vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and report suspicious activity while authorities investigate.
The incident comes amid continuing security concerns around the strategic waterway, which is a major route for global energy shipments. Reuters also reported that three Liberian-flagged oil tankers were struck by unknown projectiles in separate incidents in the strait earlier this week.
Iranian media separately reported that a large tanker had been hit near the Omani coast, but details about the vessel and circumstances remain subject to investigation
