LONDON (Web Desk): Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have received US visas to attend the UN General Assembly in New York amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The decision was confirmed by a US State Department spokesperson, who said the core Iranian delegation would be allowed to attend in line with Washington’s obligations as the host country.

The decision comes as the United States and Iran remain involved in a prolonged conflict, alongside intermittent diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions. The Iranian delegation will, however, face restrictions during its stay in the United States.

Iranian delegation to face restrictions

The US has said the Iranian delegation will be subject to movement restrictions while in the country.

The delegation will also face restrictions on the purchase of certain luxury goods. US officials said the Iranian delegation would be smaller than last year’s group.

Such restrictions have been applied to Iranian diplomats during previous visits to the United States. The measures are expected to limit the movement of Iranian officials mainly to locations connected with their diplomatic duties.

Pezeshkian and Araghchi expected in New York

Pezeshkian and Araghchi are expected to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly’s high-level meetings. The annual gathering brings together heads of state, government leaders and senior officials from around the world.

The 81st session of the General Assembly is already underway. The high-level General Debate is scheduled for September 22 to 26, with an additional sitting on September 28. The meeting will provide Iran with an opportunity to present its position on the conflict and discuss regional and international issues.

Iran-US tensions remain high

The visa decision comes at a sensitive time in relations between Washington and Tehran.

The two countries remain at odds over the conflict and several wider regional issues. The conflict has also affected neighbouring countries and key regional waterways, raising concerns about broader instability.

At the same time, diplomatic contacts aimed at reducing tensions have continued intermittently. The decision to allow Iranian leaders to attend the UN meeting therefore comes against a backdrop of both military confrontation and diplomatic efforts.

UNGA provides platform for Iran

The General Assembly gives member states a major international platform to present their positions on global issues.

Pezeshkian is expected to use the gathering to outline Iran’s position on the current situation and its relations with other countries. Araghchi is also expected to take part in diplomatic meetings on the sidelines of the UN gathering.

Foreign ministers traditionally hold many bilateral meetings during the high-level week. For Iran, the New York visit could therefore provide an opportunity for discussions with foreign officials at a time of heightened regional tensions.

US has imposed restrictions on Iranian diplomats before

The latest decision follows previous US restrictions on Iranian officials visiting the country. Iranian diplomats have previously faced limits on where they can travel while in the United States.

They have also faced restrictions on purchasing certain luxury goods. The latest measures indicate that Washington is allowing the Iranian delegation to participate in the UN gathering while maintaining restrictions during its stay.

Palestinian delegation faces different decision

The US decision on the Iranian delegation comes alongside a separate dispute involving Palestinian officials. Washington has again denied visas to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinian officials for this year’s General Assembly.

The United Nations has responded by allowing Abbas to address the gathering through a video statement after the US visa decision. A General Assembly resolution approved the arrangement by a large majority.

The different decisions have added another diplomatic issue to this year’s UN gathering.

World leaders prepare for high-level UN meetings

The 81st UN General Assembly will bring world leaders together in New York for several days of high-level discussions. The official UN schedule lists the General Debate from September 22 to 26 and September 28.

The agenda covers major international issues, including peace and security, development, climate change, and other global challenges. The ongoing conflict involving Iran is also expected to remain an important issue during the meetings.

What Pezeshkian’s visit could mean

Pezeshkian’s expected presence in New York will put Iran’s leadership directly before a large international audience. His visit will also allow Iranian officials to meet counterparts from other countries during the UN gathering.

Araghchi’s participation could be particularly important because foreign ministers often handle diplomatic discussions and bilateral contacts on the sidelines. However, the US restrictions mean that the Iranian delegation’s activities outside official UN-related engagements will remain limited.
