Iranian media reports Khamenei burial in Mashhad
Iranian media have reported that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried in the holy city of Mashhad following days of mourning ceremonies held across Iran and Iraq.
According to the reports, the burial took place within the courtyard of the shrine of Imam Reza. Khamenei’s eldest son, Ayatollah Seyyed Mostafa Khamenei, reportedly led the funeral prayer before the burial.
Iranian media said huge crowds gathered in Mashhad to pay their final respects, with streets packed with mourners. Reports described the scenes as one of the largest public gatherings in recent Iranian history.
State-linked media outlets claimed that six days of funeral and memorial ceremonies were organized in Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad. The reports estimated total participation at around 43 million people, although the figure has not been independently verified.
A condolence gathering is also scheduled to be held at the shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh in Qom. Iranian news agencies reported that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to attend the event following Maghrib and Isha prayers.
According to Iranian sources, Khamenei’s body was transported from Najaf to Mashhad under tight security. Iranian Air Force aircraft reportedly escorted the plane carrying the body to Mashhad Airport.
Before arriving in Iran, the body was taken to the shrines of Imam Hussain and Hazrat Abbas in Karbala, where funeral prayers were offered. Local officials in Karbala reportedly said more than seven million mourners participated in the funeral procession.
The reports have drawn widespread attention across the region, with observers closely watching developments in Iran and the broader Middle East.
