(Web Desk): A drone strike in Iraq’s Kurdistan region killed a Kurdish fighter, threatening a fragile ceasefire after recent regional tensions.

A drone strike hit an Iranian Kurdish camp in northern Iraq, killing a woman and raising tensions despite a fragile ceasefire in the region.

A drone attack on Tuesday targeted an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, leaving one woman dead and three others injured, according to party officials.

The strike hit Camp Sordash, located about 40 kilometres west of Sulaimaniyah, late in the afternoon. Mohammed Hakimi, a commander of the exiled Komala party, blamed Iran and its affiliated militias for the attack.

Initially, officials said the woman was critically injured, but Hakimi later confirmed she died from her wounds. The victims were Iranian Kurdish refugees, including fighters associated with the group.

This was the first such attack since a ceasefire linked to the recent US-Israeli conflict involving Iran came into effect last week, highlighting the continued volatility in the region.

In a separate incident, another Kurdish opposition group, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), reported a drone strike targeting its camp in Koysinjaq near Erbil. No casualties were reported in that attack.

Meanwhile, the Kurdistan region’s Counter-Terrorism Service said a warplane intercepted and destroyed two bomb-laden drones entering from Iran towards Erbil, though it did not specify which country operated the aircraft.

The Kurdistan region hosts several Iranian Kurdish rebel groups, which Iran considers terrorist organisations and accuses of links with Western and Israeli interests.
