The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report on Wednesday that a cargo vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The vessel was reported to be on fire and adrift following the incident. UKMTO said all crew members were evacuated, while two casualties were reported.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. UKMTO did not identify who may have been responsible for the attack or provide further details about the projectile.

No environmental damage reported

The maritime security agency said there was no reported environmental impact from the incident so far. It also advised vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the strategic waterway. Several commercial vessels have faced attacks or incidents involving unidentified projectiles in recent days.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route, particularly for oil and gas supplies. Recent disruptions have already contributed to a sharp decline in vessel traffic through the waterway.

According to Reuters, commodity vessel crossings fell significantly earlier this week compared with normal levels before the current conflict.
