Zilhaj moon sighted in two countries ahead of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan
Tunisia became the first country to officially announce the start of Zilhaj 1447 Hijri. Authorities confirmed that Saturday, May 16, was the 29th of Ziqad, and the moon was successfully sighted.
Turkiye also announced that Monday, May 18, would be observed as the first day of Zilhaj. The country follows a pre-prepared Islamic calendar based on astronomical calculations instead of the traditional moon sighting method.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman prepared for moon sighting activities on Sunday evening. Officials in these countries are expected to announce Eidul Azha dates after receiving moon sighting reports.
In Pakistan, the meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee started to observe the Zilhaj moon. The session is being chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.
Officials said a formal announcement would be made if reliable moon sighting testimonies are received from different parts of the country. People across Pakistan are now closely waiting for the final decision regarding Eidul Azha.

Experts say different moon sighting methods often create different Eid dates in Muslim countries. However, many people now follow official announcements to avoid confusion and make travel and sacrifice plans early.
Tunisia and Turkiye announced Zilhaj dates earlier than many Islamic countries. Pakistan’s final Eidul Azha date now depends on local moon sighting reports. Astronomical calendars and traditional moon sighting methods continue to create different announcements across the Muslim world.
