Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 returns after runway overrun at Munich Airport
The Hanoi-bound flight returned to Munich Airport after experiencing a technical issue shortly after takeoff. The aircraft remained in the air for more than two hours to burn fuel before landing again.
Aircraft faces trouble after takeoff
Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the Boeing 787 had overrun the runway during takeoff. Video broadcast by ABC News showed the aircraft taking off while a large cloud of dust appeared behind it.
Vietnam Airlines confirmed that the aircraft returned to its departure airport because of a "technical issue". The airline did not give further information about the exact nature of the problem.
Munich runway temporarily closed
Munich Airport said the aircraft could not leave the north runway under its own power after landing. It remained on the runway, forcing airport authorities to close it temporarily.
Flights were then redirected through the south runway while the north runway remained unavailable. The incident affected airport operations but the aircraft was brought back safely.
Passengers and crew safe
Vietnam Airlines said the flight crew followed all required procedures during the incident and completed a safe landing at Munich Airport. "The passengers and cabin crew members are safe," the airline said.
The airline is now working with relevant authorities and other parties to inspect the Boeing 787. Further information is expected once the inspection is completed and the next operational steps are decided.
The incident appears to have been handled carefully, with the aircraft spending extra time in the air before returning to the airport. This allowed the crew to reduce the aircraft’s fuel load before landing.
The exact technical problem has not yet been disclosed, so its cause remains unclear. The upcoming aircraft inspection should provide more information about what happened during takeoff and whether further action is needed.
