Helicopter crash in Argentina kills seven people
Firefighting helicopter crashes in San Juan
A tragic helicopter crash in western Argentina has claimed the lives of seven emergency responders who were travelling to assist with firefighting operations.
The Bell 412 helicopter crashed on Wednesday in San Juan province while flying to neighbouring La Rioja province, where crews were preparing to battle a forest fire. Authorities confirmed that all seven people on board were killed in the crash.
The aircraft was on a firefighting mission
According to emergency officials, the helicopter had been used to fight forest fires in San Juan’s Ischigualasto Natural Park before being assigned to support operations in neighbouring La Rioja.
Officials said the aircraft lost contact with its base on Wednesday morning while en route to the new mission. Emergency teams later confirmed that the helicopter had crashed before reaching its destination.
Governor confirms seven deaths
San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego expressed his condolences following the tragedy.
“With profound sorrow we received the news of the helicopter accident that occurred in our province, in which seven people sadly lost their lives,” he wrote on X.
The governor said the victims included firefighters, police officers and members of the civil protection service who were carrying out their emergency duties. The incident has shocked local communities and emergency services across Argentina.

Investigation into the cause begins
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the helicopter to crash. Officials have not yet confirmed whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, or another factor contributed to the accident.
Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage, review flight records, and gather evidence before releasing their findings. Authorities said it is too early to speculate about the exact cause of the crash.
Emergency responders remembered
The victims were part of a team working to protect lives, forests, and local communities from the growing threat of wildfires. Firefighters and rescue personnel often operate in difficult and dangerous conditions, particularly during wildfire emergencies that require aerial support.
Officials praised the dedication and bravery of those who lost their lives while serving the public. Tributes have continued to pour in from government officials, emergency services, and members of the public following the accident.
Wildfires remain a major challenge
Argentina regularly faces forest fires during periods of hot and dry weather, especially in areas with large forests and protected natural parks. Firefighting helicopters play a vital role by transporting crews, carrying water, and supporting emergency operations in remote regions that are difficult to access by road.
The loss of the aircraft is expected to affect ongoing firefighting efforts until replacement resources are arranged. Authorities said emergency operations to control the forest fire will continue using other available resources.

What happens next?
Officials are expected to release more information once investigators complete the initial examination of the crash site.
The identities of the victims may be officially released after their families have been informed. The investigation will focus on determining exactly what happened and whether any safety recommendations are needed to help prevent similar accidents in the future.
