F-16 catches fire, makes emergency landing in Greece
A Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jet made an emergency landing at Zakynthos Airport after a fire warning was reported during a training flight, according to Greek and Turkish media reports.
The pilot managed to land the aircraft safely and escaped without injuries. The incident forced authorities to temporarily close Zakynthos Airport, one of Greece’s busiest tourist airports, while emergency crews responded to the situation.
Greek Air Force officials said the fighter jet developed a technical fault during the training mission, requiring an immediate emergency landing. The pilot remained safe and was reported to be in good condition.
According to Greek media, the aircraft received a fire alert before landing. Moments after touching down on the runway, flames erupted from the jet, triggering a rapid response from firefighters and airport personnel.
Reports said the F-16 landed without fully deploying its landing gear, causing the aircraft to slide along the runway for dozens of meters before coming to a stop. Emergency teams quickly surrounded the aircraft and worked to extinguish the fire.
Videos circulating on social media showed flames around the fighter jet while firefighters battled the blaze. The footage attracted significant attention online as users reacted to the dramatic landing.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. Aviation experts are expected to examine whether the fire was linked to a mechanical failure or another technical issue.
The temporary closure of the airport caused brief disruptions, but officials said safety measures were followed successfully and no other injuries were reported.
