Extraordinary footage shows 43-year-old Ahmed approaching the gunman and wrestling the rifle from him after 11 people were killed in the antisemitic attack.
The hero father of two briefly held the weapon against the gunman but did not fire. He calmly placed the gun against a tree as the assailant fled.
Ahmed was later shot by another attacker on a nearby bridge, sustaining injuries to his hand and shoulder. He is now undergoing surgery. A passer-by also helped by throwing a rock at the fleeing terrorist.
Ahmed, who owns a shop in Sutherland, had no prior experience with guns. His relative told Channel Seven, “He’s a hero, he’s 100 per cent a hero.” Premier Chris Minns praised his selfless act, saying it forced the attackers to retreat and likely saved many lives.
The attack occurred during a Hanukkah celebration attended by at least 200 people. Police confirmed 12 people were killed, including one gunman, while 29 others, including children and two officers, were injured. Authorities are investigating whether a third gunman was involved.
