China has strongly criticized the United States after it imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, calling the move “dangerous and irresponsible” and warning that it could further destabilize the region.
The reaction came after US President Donald Trump threatened action against vessels attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports and coastal waters in the Gulf. The decision followed unsuccessful peace talks held over the weekend. The blockade officially came into effect at 1400 GMT on Monday, even though a temporary two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran had been agreed just days earlier.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said the US military buildup and blockade actions would only increase tensions and weaken the already fragile ceasefire agreement. He also warned that it could endanger navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes.
China said the situation is especially serious because Iran has already restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz for what it considers unfriendly nations, allowing only selected countries to pass.

Analysts believe the US move is aimed at limiting Iran’s revenue and putting pressure on China, which is the largest buyer of Iranian oil, to influence Tehran’s decisions regarding the strait.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations described the US blockade as a “grave violation” of Iran’s sovereignty, further escalating diplomatic tensions.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for respect for national sovereignty in the Gulf and Middle East. He said China would continue to play a constructive role in encouraging dialogue and peace efforts.
Xi made these remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as several regional leaders continue diplomatic visits amid rising tensions.
