NEW DELHI: (Web Desk) As counting of votes head towards its conclusion, with results being declared for the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, the Congress Tuesday said the results were a victory of the citizens and of democracy.

“The INDIA alliance and the Congress party fought against BJP, Indian institutions, the structures of governance such as CBI, ED, half of judiciary, because Narendra Modi ji and Amit Shah ji had threatened them,” Gandhi said, adding that this election has shown that people of this country “have unanimously stated that they do not want Mr Modi and Mr Amit Shah to be involved in the running of this country.”

Raising a copy of the constitution in his hand, Gandhi said, “the fight was to save the Constitution… we were sure that the citizens of India would make attempts to guard it and I would like to thank everyone.”

He added that the poorer sections of the society had ensured to protect the Constitution, as Indian Express reported.

Earlier, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, said, “It is people’s victory, and presents the victory of democracy… We have been saying that this is a fight between Modi and people, so in the 18th Lok Sabha elections, we welcome the verdict politely. This time, people did not give complete majority to anyone… BJP tried to gain votes in one name, it is evident that the mandate has gone against Modiji, it is his political and moral defeat.”

The INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress, has made a remarkable comeback and taken the lead over the BJP-led NDA in Uttar Pradesh.

Gandhi won the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of over 4 lakh seats in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. With over 670,000 votes, Rahul emerged victorious while Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dinesh Pratap Singh was placed at a distant second position and Bahujan Samaj Party’s Thakur Prasad Yadav third.

The Congress party has also wrested Amethi from BJP, defeating Union minister Smriti Irani.

After the seven phases of polling for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 ended on June 1, exit polls had painted a positive picture for the BJP-led NDA government, predicting a remarkable third term for PM Modi. The Congress, terming the exit polls “bogus,” had said the predictions were a “deliberate attempt to justify rigging” of the elections and part of “psychological games” being played by PM Modi to lower the morale of the INDIA alliance workers.

The Opposition INDIA bloc, however, reversing the exit poll predictions, has managed to lead in at least 222 seats, according to the latest numbers.
