Trump open to Iran talks despite fresh tensions
The White House has said that the United States remains in contact with Iran despite renewed tensions, while President Donald Trump is still willing to pursue diplomacy with Tehran.
Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Trump administration continues to communicate with Iran and remains open to reaching an agreement. She noted that Tehran has signaled its interest in making a deal and that discussions between the two countries are ongoing.
Leavitt stressed that President Trump would hold Iran accountable if it backs away from commitments made to the United States. At the same time, she emphasized that the president continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further instability in the region.
The White House also issued a strong warning regarding security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. Leavitt said President Trump would not tolerate attacks on commercial vessels in the waterway and warned that Iran would face consequences if such incidents occur.
Her remarks come amid growing concerns over the future of US-Iran relations following recent regional tensions. The administration has repeatedly stated that it prefers a diplomatic solution but is prepared to take action if necessary.
Earlier, Trump warned that if Iran refuses to return to negotiations, Washington could expand the scope of any future military action. He indicated that critical infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, could become potential targets if diplomatic efforts fail.
The latest comments highlight the White House’s dual approach of maintaining diplomatic engagement while keeping military options on the table.
