US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs of up to 100% on drones and drone parts imported into the United States, citing national security concerns.

According to the White House, the highest tariff will apply to certain unmanned aircraft systems weighing more than 25 kilograms and equipped with capabilities such as thermal imaging and docking stations.

Smaller drones will face a 25% tariff under the new policy, while most of the tariffs are scheduled to take effect from September 3.

The White House said the measures are aimed at increasing domestic production of drones and their components while reducing America’s dependence on foreign supply chains.

The move is part of Washington’s broader effort to strengthen domestic manufacturing and address national security risks linked to imported technology.

Officials have increasingly focused on drones because of their growing use in surveillance, logistics, security and military operations. The new tariffs could therefore have an impact on both commercial and specialised drone markets in the US.

The announcement also comes amid growing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

China announced last week that it would restrict exports of drones to the United States and blacklist six companies. Beijing said the measures were in response to US trade restrictions linked to concerns over forced labour and national security.

The latest US drone tariffs were announced only days after Washington imposed new tariffs on China and 59 other countries.

The developments highlight the growing competition between the United States and China over technology, manufacturing and supply chains. Drone-related trade has become another major area of concern as both countries seek greater control over strategically important technologies.
