(Web Desk): Former US president Bill Clinton has cited the Quran to condemn anti-Muslim rhetoric, urging Americans to respect people of different faiths and backgrounds.

Speaking at Koinonia Worship Center in Florida, the former US president said he was tired of people attacking Muslims simply because of their religion. He called for greater understanding and warned against growing religious and cultural divisions in the United States.

Clinton shares Quranic message

“I’m tired of people denigrating Muslims for being Muslims,” Clinton said while criticising religious intolerance. He referred to a Quranic message encouraging people from different backgrounds to understand one another.

Clinton said his daughter, Chelsea Clinton, introduced him to the Quran when she was a teenager. According to him, she had read the religious text and later encouraged him to read it as well.

Quran calls for mutual understanding

Clinton’s remarks echoed verse 49:13 of the Quran, which explains that humanity was created as different nations and tribes so people could know one another. The message encourages understanding rather than treating religious and cultural differences as reasons for hostility.

The former president also said people should not use religion to justify discrimination. He argued that every faith has people who do wrong because human beings are imperfect.

Debate over Muslims in US politics

Clinton’s comments come amid a heated political debate over Islam and Muslim representation in the United States. His remarks have drawn attention as Muslim Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed faces criticism over his faith during his campaign for a US Senate seat in Michigan.

El-Sayed, a former public health official, is seeking to become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. According to the report, some political opponents have attempted to link him to extremist groups.

Trump remarks and Michigan Senate race

US President Donald Trump recently referred to El-Sayed as “Mohammed” and called him a “jihadist”, according to reports. El-Sayed has also publicly condemned the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic political movement founded in Egypt in 1928.

The Senate contest between El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers has been closely fought, with polling suggesting a competitive race. Former US president Barack Obama has also campaigned for El-Sayed in the final weeks of the election campaign.

Clinton’s remarks highlight the continuing debate over religious tolerance and Muslim representation in American politics. His message calls for people to judge others fairly rather than target them because of their faith.

The Michigan Senate race also shows how religion can become a major issue during an election campaign. The candidates’ positions and voters’ responses will help shape the contest.
