Crime in Rio is very high compared to many cities. You are more likely to hear about violent incidents such as shootings, armed robbery or gang-activity than in safer cities. At the same time, the risk is not evenly spread: many safer tourist zones exist, and some parts of the city are relatively less dangerous. The numbers show big problems in policing, gang control, and organised crime.
