WASHINGTON DC: (Reuters) A replica wax statue of Abraham Lincoln was no match for sweltering temperatures that hit Washington DC this week, causing the statue to partially melt and the head to fall off.

Temperatures hovering near 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) for the past few days have slowly melted the 6-foot (1.8 meter) wax creation of the Lincoln Memorial, a tribute to the iconic 16th president of the United States.

Kristi Maiselman, the Executive Director and Curator of CulturalDC, the sponsor of the exhibit, said the attention the heat-related mishap has caused has brought positive attention to the project they had not anticipated.

She added the head would likely not be reinstalled this summer due to the risk that it would fall off again and suffer additional damage.

The wax creation is an actual candle with wicks and part of a series of wax monument statues.
