Competition among social media apps is heating up fast. A new report shows that Threads is now ahead of X in daily mobile activity, even though X still leads on web use.
According to market intelligence firm Similarweb, the Threads app on iOS and Android has seen steady growth for months. This rise has not slowed, and daily usage keeps climbing.
Data shared by Similarweb shows that Threads reached 141.5 million daily active mobile users, while X stood at 125 million. This gap has surprised many industry watchers.

Experts say this growth is not a sudden reaction to recent controversies at X. Instead, it reflects a longer trend of users slowly changing their habits.
Recently, X users were found using the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, ‘to create non-consensual nude images, including images of minors’. This raised serious concerns worldwide.
Following the incident, California’s attorney general launched an investigation into Grok. Similar probes are also underway in the UK, EU, India, and Brazil.
The problems at X have also helped smaller platforms. Social networking startup Bluesky saw a sharp rise in app installations during the same period.
Threads’ success is linked to strong support from Meta. The company promoted Threads heavily on Facebook and Instagram and focused on attracting content creators.

Over the past year, Threads introduced interest-based communities, better filters, direct messaging, long-form text, disappearing posts, and is now testing games.
Meta earlier said Threads crossed 400 million monthly active users. It also reported 150 million daily active users a few months later, showing strong momentum.
While X remains more popular in the U.S, the gap is closing. Analysts say Threads’ mobile-first design fits better with how users now consume social media.
