(Web Desk): WhatsApp is launching a new update for Android users that upgrades the typing indicator in group chats offering better visibility of conversations taking place.

Instead of seeing only one name (e.g. “Ali is typing…”), users will now see a real-time count like “2 people typing…” right in the chat preview—no need to open the group to know if the conversation is heating up.

This is only available to Android beta users (version 2.25.20.17).

Users can now preview group activity and decide whether to jump in or wait. Moreover, the new indicator applies only to text typing. If several users are recording voice notes, WhatsApp will revert to the old single-name style. The feature is currently available to select Android beta testers and will expand to more users in the coming weeks.

In bustling group chats, knowing exactly who’s typing and when makes the conversation feel more alive—and helps users judge if they should interrupt or give it time. It s a modest tweak, but one that adds clarity and convenience for anyone managing multiple chat threads

For those juggling bustling group discussions—team projects, family planning, or meetup coordination—this update brings welcome transparency. No longer in the dark, you can better anticipate replies and time your engagement.

WhatsApp plans to roll this out widely after beta testing wraps up.
