ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): Pakistan’s IT exports reached $417 million in July 2026, giving the technology sector a strong start to the new fiscal year amid rising global demand.

The latest figures from the State Bank of Pakistan show that IT exports increased by 18% compared with July last year. The monthly figure also remained above the important $400 million level.

The performance has raised expectations that Pakistan’s technology sector could maintain its growth during the 2026-27 fiscal year. Industry observers believe continued demand for software, digital services and outsourcing could push exports even higher.

IT exports begin new fiscal year strongly

July’s performance follows a record year for Pakistan’s IT industry. IT and IT-enabled services exports reached around $4.6 billion during fiscal year 2025-26, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

The State Bank data also showed that monthly IT exports reached $416 million in June 2026. This was 23% higher than the same month a year earlier, highlighting the steady expansion of the sector.

The latest July figure suggests that the momentum has continued into the new fiscal year. If monthly earnings remain close to or above $400 million, the annual export total could rise significantly.

The government has also set ambitious longer-term targets for the sector. Under its economic plans, Pakistan aims to expand technology exports substantially in the coming years.

Freelancers remain an important source of earnings

Pakistan’s growing freelance workforce is another important part of the country’s digital export story. Freelancers provide services to overseas clients in areas such as software development, graphic design, digital marketing and online business support.

Available government data showed strong growth in freelance earnings during the previous fiscal year. The Economic Survey reported that freelance exports reached $856.3 million during July-March FY2026, up sharply from $567.5 million during the same period a year earlier.

The wider IT sector has also expanded its international presence. Pakistani companies are increasingly targeting markets in the Middle East, Europe and other regions, helping bring more foreign exchange into the country.

This expansion is important because technology services can generate foreign exchange without requiring the shipment of physical goods. It also creates opportunities for young professionals who can work with international clients from Pakistan.

Google office expected to support digital opportunities

The government is also looking toward greater involvement from major global technology companies. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has described the establishment of a Google office in Pakistan as an important development for the country’s digital economy.

According to the minister, greater cooperation with global technology companies could help expand digital skills, employment and business opportunities. She has also highlighted the role of technology in strengthening Pakistan’s position in the international digital market.

The Ministry of IT has continued to present IT exports as a key part of Pakistan’s economic transformation. In July, the ministry said the country was making significant progress in IT exports and connectivity, while continuing efforts to build a stronger digital economy.

Shaza Fatima has also said the government is targeting much larger IT export earnings over the next few years. The ministry’s current strategy includes expanding the technology workforce and supporting digital businesses.

What the latest numbers mean for Pakistan

The July figure is encouraging because it shows that Pakistan’s IT export growth has carried into the new financial year. However, maintaining this pace will depend on several factors, including international demand, internet connectivity, skilled workers and a supportive business environment.

The sector also needs stronger infrastructure and easier access to global markets. Consistent policies can help technology companies plan long-term investments and compete more effectively with regional competitors.

The government’s focus on digital skills could also become important as demand for technology workers continues to increase. More trained professionals would allow Pakistani companies and freelancers to take on larger international projects.
