Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could pose a serious threat if it falls into the wrong hands, calling for stronger government oversight and regulation.

In a recent interview, Gates said AI is powerful enough to enable events causing mass casualties on a scale not previously seen. He also warned that malicious actors could use advanced AI tools to cause widespread harm.

Gates said governments should not rely only on technology companies to regulate themselves. He called for legislation, monitoring and enforcement to ensure that AI development does not create unchecked risks.

AI could empower malicious actors

Gates has previously warned that AI could make it easier for criminals and other malicious actors to conduct cyberattacks, create dangerous biological threats and spread disinformation.

In an essay published in August, he highlighted risks to hospitals, financial institutions, power grids and other critical infrastructure from AI-enabled cyberattacks. He also warned that autonomous weapons could increase the ability of governments to use deadly force.

At the same time, Gates has stressed that AI can provide major benefits in healthcare, education and agriculture if it is developed and used responsibly.

He has urged governments around the world to prepare for the rapid changes brought by AI while creating safeguards to reduce potential harm.

The debate over AI regulation is growing globally as governments, technology companies and researchers consider how to balance innovation with security and public safety.
