Egypt took the lead just before half-time when Salah scored from the spot after a ‘Video Assistant Review’ (VAR) review. The decision was debated, but the Liverpool star calmly chipped the ball into the net.
Moments later, Egypt suffered a setback. Right-back Mohamed Hany received his second yellow card in stoppage time of the first half, leaving his team a man down.
South Africa pushed harder after the break and made attacking changes, but Egypt’s defence stayed strong. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was key, making crucial saves to deny Aubrey Modiba and Siyabonga Ngezana late in the game.
South Africa also appealed for a handball penalty after 90 minutes. The referee checked VAR but ruled the defender’s arm was in a natural position and waved play on.

Earlier, Angola’s draw with Zimbabwe confirmed Egypt’s place in the last 16 with one match still to play. Egypt is now favorites to top Group B.
South Africa remains in contention but must avoid mistakes in their final group match against Zimbabwe to be sure of qualification.
