Belgium beat Senegal 3-2 in thrilling World Cup clash
Belgium produced one of the biggest comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating Senegal 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling Round of 32 clash. After trailing by two goals, Belgium fought back with three unanswered goals to book their place in the last 16.
Senegal completely dominated the first half with a disciplined and organised performance. Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 24th minute after a well-worked team move, giving the African side a deserved lead.
Just after the break, Ismaïla Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage with a powerful finish following another impressive attacking move. At that stage, Senegal looked in complete control and appeared set to qualify for the next round.
However, the match changed after Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku at half-time. His movement, strength and attacking presence created problems for Senegal’s defence, while coach Rudi Garcia’s tactical adjustments gradually shifted the momentum in Belgium’s favour. Thomas Meunier also made a huge impact after coming on late in the match. Belgium finally pulled one back in the 86th minute when Lukaku scored from close range.

Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans headed home from Meunier’s cross to make it 2-2 and force the match into extra time, completing an incredible late comeback. Both teams created chances during extra time, but Belgium continued to look more dangerous as Senegal’s defence came under increasing pressure.
The decisive moment came in the 117th minute when Lamine Camara fouled Tielemans inside the penalty area. After reviewing the incident through VAR, the referee awarded Belgium a penalty. Tielemans calmly converted the spot-kick into the top corner, completing Belgium’s remarkable comeback and sending his team into the FIFA World Cup 2026 last 16 while ending Senegal’s hopes of progressing.
