Algeria fight back to beat Jordan and keep World Cup hopes alive
Jordan made an impressive start and took the lead in the first half through Nizar Al-Rashdan. The goal gave the debutants hope of securing a famous result and remaining in contention for a place in the next round.
Algeria, however, responded with determination after the break. Substitute Nadhir Benbouali made an immediate impact by scoring a header to bring his side level and shift the momentum in Algeria’s favour. As the match entered its final stages, both teams pushed hard for a winner. With just eight minutes remaining, Amine Gouiri scored the decisive goal during a crowded goalmouth scramble, completing Algeria’s comeback and sparking celebrations among their supporters.
The victory revived Algeria’s campaign after their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Argentina in the opening match. The result also moved Algeria level with Austria on three points in Group J. Speaking after the match, Gouiri said Algeria had performed much better than in their first game. He admitted the team conceded an early goal but praised his teammates for showing character and mental strength to turn the match around.

The result also confirmed defending champions Argentina as Group J winners after their 2-0 victory over Austria earlier in the day. For Jordan, the defeat marked a heartbreaking end to their first-ever World Cup campaign. Goalkeeper Yazeed Abu Laila expressed disappointment after the match, saying his team had opportunities to control the game but failed to take their chances.
He accepted responsibility on behalf of the players and apologized to Jordan’s supporters, saying the team was disappointed not to reward the fans for their unwavering support. Although Jordan’s World Cup journey has ended earlier than hoped, the team gained valuable experience on football’s biggest stage and showed promising signs throughout the tournament.
