The Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11 is poised for a historic transformation as the league prepares to introduce a player auction system for the first time ever, moving away from its traditional draft and retention-based model.
The landmark decision was discussed in a high-level meeting between PSL CEO Salman Naseer and franchise owners, where the majority of teams expressed full support for adopting the PSL player auction format. The new system is expected to be implemented immediately after receiving formal approval from the PCB Chairman.
To ensure a smooth transition, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has scheduled a special workshop on Sunday, aimed at briefing franchise owners on auction rules, procedures, and operational mechanics. Officials describe the move not as a minor tweak, but as a fundamental overhaul of how PSL teams are built.
However, the proposed change has sparked intense debate among stakeholders. All five existing PSL franchises have jointly demanded the right to retain four players each, including their designated brand ambassador, in order to protect team identity and retain marquee stars.

In contrast, newly proposed franchises are pushing for a zero-retention policy, arguing that a fully open auction would ensure fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all teams entering PSL 11. The final verdict on player retention versus open auction is expected from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, keeping tensions high within the league.
During the PSL Governing Council meeting held at the National Cricket Academy, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi strongly advocated for an open auction model, stating that it would be highly beneficial for players by increasing market value and competitive opportunities.
The meeting also covered key agenda items including player retentions, auction or hybrid acquisition models, and the PSL 11 schedule. Officials confirmed that the league is considering multiple options, including a hybrid system combining auctions with direct signings.
A dedicated working group is scheduled to meet on Saturday to finalize unresolved matters, while the Governing Council may reconvene if required. Addressing the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi declared that the PSL is entering a new era of expansion and transformation, featuring new teams, revised structures, and a refreshed timeline.
As PSL Season 11 approaches, the introduction of a player auction signals a bold step toward modernization, promising increased excitement for fans, greater transparency for franchises, and expanded opportunities for players.
