Pakistan slips to bottom of WTC table after England defeat
Pakistan’s position in the World Test Championship has worsened after the national team suffered a heavy defeat against England in the first Test.
Pakistan has slipped below the West Indies and now sits at the bottom of the WTC points table with 19.05 percentage points.
England dominates at Headingley
England defeated Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs on the third day of the Headingley Test to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The victory also earned England valuable World Test Championship points and strengthened its position in the competition.
For Pakistan, the defeat is particularly concerning because the team was already struggling near the bottom of the WTC standings. The latest loss has put further pressure on the side ahead of the second Test.
Lord’s Test becomes crucial
Pakistan and England will meet again in the second Test at the historic Lord’s ground from August 27.
Pakistan will need significant improvements in both batting and bowling to level the series and revive its WTC campaign.
British media criticises Pakistan
British media outlets have also raised serious concerns about the current Pakistan Test team, describing it as one of the weakest Pakistan sides seen in England in decades.
Reports criticised Pakistan’s bowling performance, saying the bowlers failed to trouble England’s batters even on a dry Headingley pitch.
Pakistan’s fielding also came under criticism after several misfields and dropped catches allowed Joe Root, Harry Brook and Dan Lawrence to score freely.
Batting and pace remain concerns
The report noted that Pakistan’s final eight wickets fell for just 74 runs.
It also highlighted a decline in batting quality compared with Pakistan’s past greats, while concerns remain over the pace and overall quality of the fast-bowling attack.
