Rain alert issued as wet spell to hit Pakistan from July 7
Pakistan is expected to experience a fresh spell of monsoon rain from July 7 to July 10, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warning of heavy showers, possible urban flooding and landslides in northern regions.
According to the NDMA, a weather system is set to enter the country's northern areas on Monday, bringing rain and thunderstorms to Azad Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Potohar region and northeastern Punjab.
The authority said rainfall is also expected in areas located along the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers. The incoming showers may slightly increase water flows in these rivers, while inflows into Tarbela and Mangla dams are also likely to rise.
Despite the expected increase in river flows, the NDMA said there is currently no threat of large-scale river flooding. However, authorities warned that hill torrents and seasonal streams could experience a sharp rise in water levels during periods of heavy rainfall.
Low-lying urban areas may face temporary waterlogging and localized flooding, particularly if intense downpours occur within a short period.
The disaster management authority also cautioned that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir remain at risk of landslides due to rainfall in mountainous terrain, which could disrupt road traffic and affect local communities.
Residents have been advised to stay updated with official weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone and mountainous areas during heavy rain, and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Emergency response agencies have also been directed to remain alert to deal with any weather-related incidents during the four-day wet spell.
