Flood alert: PMD predicts rain and thundershowers from August 17 to 21

The weather system could bring rain with occasional breaks over the coming days. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), monsoon currents are still moving into the upper parts of the country. A westerly wave is also expected to enter the upper areas, increasing the chances of rainfall.

Punjab areas likely to receive rain

Several Punjab districts are expected to receive rain and thundershowers, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock. Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Kasur and nearby areas are also likely to see wet weather.

Other affected areas include Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal. Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and D.G Khan may receive rain on August 20 and 21.

Urban flooding and landslide risk

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority warned that heavy rainfall could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore. The risk is expected to remain higher during the period when heavy showers occur.

Murree and Galyat could also face landslides in vulnerable locations because of the expected rainfall. “Tourists and travellers are advised to remain cautious during the forecast period,” the PDMA said.

Authorities told to stay ready

The PDMA has directed district administrations to prepare risk-mitigation plans and keep enough staff available around the clock. Officials have also been asked to maintain close coordination with the PDMA and other departments for a quick response.

Authorities were told to share safety and evacuation information quickly through electronic and social media. They were also directed to clear drains, remove silt and place heavy machinery at vulnerable points before any emergency develops.

The Motorway Police has been asked to issue regular traffic and road-condition updates for travellers. “Motorway Police shall ensure regular traffic advisories, timely updates on road conditions and guidance to travellers for safe travel,” it said.

Rescue 1122 has also been told to remain on alert and keep search-and-rescue teams and necessary equipment ready. Farmers have been advised to plan crop activities according to the weather and protect their livestock.

The expected rain may bring relief from hot weather, but heavy showers could create problems in low-lying and vulnerable areas. Cities such as Lahore and Rawalpindi may need extra attention because of the risk of urban flooding.

The early preparations by authorities could help reduce the impact of heavy rainfall. Travellers, tourists and farmers should also stay updated because weather conditions can change quickly.
