The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a travel advisory after dense fog led to the closure of five major motorways across Punjab and adjoining areas, severely disrupting road travel.
According to the latest update from NHMP, dangerously low visibility forced authorities to shut multiple motorway sections as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents. The affected routes include the
- M-2 from Thokar Niaz Baig to Chakri
- M-3 from Faizpur to Rajana
- M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Shorkot
- M-11 from Lahore to Sambrial
- M-14 from Kharpa to Isa Khel.
NHMP officials said thick fog reduced visibility to extremely unsafe levels, making driving highly hazardous, particularly during night-time and early morning hours. The closures were imposed to ensure the safety of motorists and reduce the risk of serious traffic accidents.
Dense winter fog is a recurring issue in Punjab during the colder months and frequently results in temporary shutdowns of key highways. Traffic records show that fog-related conditions contribute to a large number of road accidents each year, especially involving long-distance and heavy vehicles.

As of Thursday evening, the affected motorway sections remained closed, with authorities continuing to monitor weather and visibility conditions. Commuters have been advised to stay informed through official NHMP updates before starting their journeys.
Motorists have also been urged to postpone non-essential travel, opt for alternative routes where possible, and prefer daytime travel when visibility improves. The NHMP further advised drivers to use fog lights, maintain safe speeds, keep adequate distance from other vehicles, and strictly follow traffic rules until conditions return to normal.
