(Web Desk): Dense fog and near-zero visibility have led to the closure of multiple motorway sections across Punjab, as the Motorway Police suspended traffic to prevent accidents and protect commuters amid worsening winter conditions.

According to Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, several key routes were shut due to dangerously low visibility. Traffic on Motorway M3 was suspended from Faizpur Interchange to Jaranwala, while Motorway M4 remained closed from Pindi Bhattian to Multan. The Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M11) was also shut, and traffic on Motorway M5 from Multan to Zahir Pir continued to remain suspended due to dense fog.

Officials said the motorway closure due to fog was a precautionary step as visibility dropped to zero in many areas, making travel extremely hazardous. In addition to motorways, fog severely affected several sections of national highways. Areas including Manga Mandi, Phool Nagar, Jambar, Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, and Mian Channu reported poor visibility, resulting in slow traffic movement and long queues of vehicles.

Early morning hours saw especially severe conditions in Jaranwala, Thikriwala, and Kamalia, where thick fog reduced visibility to almost nothing. The situation caused major inconvenience for commuters, while cold weather further disrupted daily routines across the region.

The Motorway Police urged drivers to strictly follow safety instructions, including using fog lights, avoiding overspeeding, maintaining lane discipline, and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles. Authorities warned that lane violations during foggy conditions significantly increase the risk of serious and fatal accidents.

Travelers were also advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and plan travel during relatively safer hours, which are considered to be between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm during foggy weather. Motorists seeking updates or emergency assistance were instructed to contact the Motorway Police helpline 130.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that cold weather and dense fog may persist over the coming days, urging citizens to remain cautious and follow official advisories to minimize risks on roads.
