LAHORE (Web Desk): Pak-Iran ferry service has been inaugurated at Karachi Port Trust, opening a new sea route to Chabahar with a Rs50,000 round-trip fare.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry inaugurated the new ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust (KPT). He called it a major step to promote regional and coastal tourism and to strengthen Pakistan’s blue economy.

The minister said the ferry service fulfils his long-held vision of modern, safe, and sustainable passenger travel by sea. He announced the soft launch of Pakistan’s first-ever ferry service between Karachi and Iran’s Chabahar Port.

Officials said the service will start in the third week of January. The first ferry will leave Karachi with up to 240 passengers and is expected to reach Chabahar in 12 to 14 hours.

The ferry will operate three round-trip every week. Each passenger will pay Rs50,000 for a round trip, making sea travel a new option for regional movement.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the project supports the Prime Minister’s vision of using the full potential of the blue economy. “This ferry service is not just a transport initiative but a gateway to economic opportunities, tourism promotion, and regional connectivity,” he said.

He added that this was the first ferry service license ever issued in Pakistan’s history, calling it a historic moment for the maritime sector. The new terminal, he said, will also build trust among investors and encourage private sector participation.

The minister said the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and its attached organizations are working on policy reforms, better infrastructure, and public-private partnerships to boost maritime activities.

He revealed that several businessmen have already shown interest in getting licenses to operate ferry services. According to him, private sector involvement can create jobs and growth in tourism, hospitality, transport, and related industries.
