(Web Desk): Punjab has enforced strict penalties against illegal kite flying, while allowing limited Basant celebrations in Lahore under tight conditions.

The existing ban on kite flying across Punjab remains in force as the Punjab Home Department has issued fresh directives to further tighten enforcement and penalties against violators.

According to the Home Department, anyone found involved in kite flying can face severe punishment, including up to five years in prison and a fine of up to Rs20 lakh. Even stricter penalties have been announced for those involved in manufacturing, selling, or transporting kites and kite strings, who may be sentenced to up to seven years in jail along with fines reaching Rs50 lakh.

Officials said the tough measures aim to prevent fatal accidents linked to kite flying, particularly those caused by sharp and metal-coated strings. Over the years, such strings have posed serious threats to public safety, especially to motorcyclists, pedestrians, children, and elderly citizens.

Authorities highlighted that kite strings can cut deeply, leading to life-threatening injuries and, in some cases, deaths. These risks have prompted the government to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against illegal kite flying activities across the province.

However, the Punjab government has allowed limited kite flying during the Basant festival in Lahore only. This special permission applies strictly to February 6, 7, and 8, and is confined to designated areas within the city. Outside these dates and locations, kite flying or kite-making will remain illegal.

The Home Department warned that any kite flying before the approved dates or beyond permitted zones will result in strict legal action. Officials stressed that early or unauthorized activities endanger lives and will not be tolerated.

The government reiterated its commitment to protecting public safety and said all relevant departments have been directed to ensure full enforcement of the ban and take action against violators without exception.
