Punjab launches QR panic button for safer public transport
Punjab has launched a new QR Panic Button initiative aimed at improving passenger safety in public transport by providing instant access to emergency services and real-time support.
Under the program, commuters can scan a QR code displayed inside registered vehicles to access several security features through their mobile phones. The initiative has been introduced under the supervision of Punjab authorities and the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA).
The QR Panic Button allows passengers to verify vehicle details before starting their journey. Users can also access live location sharing, enabling family members to monitor their travel in real time and stay informed about their whereabouts.
Another key feature is trip sharing, which lets passengers send journey details to relatives and friends for added security. Authorities believe this feature will help people feel safer, especially during late-night travel or when using unfamiliar transport services.
The system also offers video call support and direct access to the police emergency helpline 15. In any emergency situation, passengers can activate the panic button through the QR code, instantly alerting authorities and sharing their location for a faster response.
Officials said the initiative is designed to strengthen public confidence in transport services and improve emergency response times across Punjab. Citizens have been encouraged to use the QR Panic Button whenever they feel unsafe or require immediate assistance during a journey.
The government hopes the technology-driven safety measure will enhance passenger protection and contribute to a more secure public transport network throughout the province.
