Punjab launches crackdown on transport overcharging before Eid
The chief minister directed deputy commissioners and district police officers to carry out detailed inspections of buses, transport terminals, and bus stands across Punjab to ensure safe and fair travel facilities for citizens.
Authorities have also been instructed to ensure that official fare lists are clearly displayed inside buses and at bus terminals so passengers can easily check approved ticket prices and avoid extra charges.
Maryam Nawaz ordered officials to take strict legal action against transport operators found charging excessive fares during Eid travel days. According to officials, route permits and terminal licenses of transporters involved in overcharging may also be cancelled as part of the crackdown.
The chief minister further directed that buses operating without valid fitness certificates should be immediately removed from the roads to avoid accidents and safety risks during the heavy Eid traffic. Strict action has also been ordered against overcrowding and overloading in public transport vehicles to ensure passenger safety and comfort.

In addition, authorities have been asked to provide clean drinking water facilities at bus stations and terminals for travellers during the busy Eid period. The Punjab Transport Department has also launched helpline 1071, allowing citizens to report complaints related to overcharging, overloading, and transport issues during Eid travel.
Officials said the measures are aimed at protecting passengers from exploitation and improving transport conditions during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Passengers have welcomed the government’s decision, saying transport fares usually increase sharply before Eid, causing difficulties for families travelling to their hometowns.
Analysts suggest that strict monitoring and public complaint systems can help mitigate transport-related issues during Eid holidays. They also believe better enforcement of transport rules may improve passenger safety and discourage illegal fare increases across Punjab.
