(Web Desk): Punjab has imposed Section 144 for 60 days, banning swimming and boating in rivers, canals, dams and rainwater-filled areas amid monsoon safety concerns.

The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province, banning swimming, bathing and unauthorised boating in rivers, canals, dams, lakes, ponds and rainwater-filled areas for 60 days to prevent drowning incidents during the ongoing monsoon season.

According to an official notification, the restrictions also prohibit people from bathing in rainwater accumulated on roads, streets, open spaces and public places. The order has been enforced under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, and applies throughout Punjab.

Authorities said the decision was taken due to persistent monsoon rains, rising water levels and increasing safety risks. Heavy rainfall has caused water to collect in low-lying areas, while rivers, canals and reservoirs are flowing at high levels, making swimming and recreational activities extremely dangerous.

The notification also bans unauthorised boating in dams, rivers, canals, lakes, ponds and distributaries, warning that strong currents and rising water levels could pose a serious threat to public safety.

Officials said children and young people are particularly vulnerable, as many drowning incidents occur during the monsoon when people enter floodwater or swollen waterways for recreation.

The provincial administration has directed district authorities and law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the restrictions. Public awareness campaigns will also be launched to inform residents about the dangers of entering rainwater and fast-flowing water bodies.

The latest measures come as Punjab continues to experience widespread monsoon rainfall, prompting authorities to strengthen emergency preparedness and encourage the public to follow official safety advisories.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary visits to rivers, canals and flooded areas and to immediately report any emergency situation to local rescue services.
