Punjab imposes Section 144 across province ahead of Muharram
The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province to ensure peace and maintain law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram, introducing a range of security restrictions from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram.
According to an official notification, the restrictions will remain in place throughout the first ten days of Muharram as part of a comprehensive security plan to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure peaceful religious observances across the province.
Under the directive, a ban on double riding will be enforced on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, commonly observed as Ashura days. Authorities say the step has been taken to enhance security and reduce potential risks during large religious gatherings and processions.
The notification further states that law enforcement agencies will remain on high alert, with increased patrolling and monitoring in sensitive areas. Strict action will be taken against any violation of Section 144 orders during the restricted period.
Officials have emphasized that the decision is aimed at maintaining public safety and ensuring a peaceful environment for mourning processions, religious gatherings and other Muharram-related events held across the province.
Security arrangements have also been strengthened in major cities and districts, with coordination among police, district administrations and other security agencies to manage crowds and monitor potential threats.
Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement personnel and follow all guidelines issued during the Muharram period. The government has assured that all necessary measures are in place to protect lives and property while ensuring smooth observance of religious rituals.
The restrictions will remain effective until the completion of Ashura, after which normal activities will resume across Punjab.
