Nation pays tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed on 61st anniversary
Major Aziz Bhatti is remembered for his exceptional bravery during the 1965 war, when he defended the Burki sector near Lahore against sustained enemy attacks.
The Armed Forces have paid tribute to the martyr, recalling his courage, leadership, and devotion to duty. Military leaders said his sacrifice continues to inspire generations of Pakistanis and those serving in the armed forces.
Major Aziz Bhatti’s early life and military career
Major Aziz Bhatti was born on August 6, 1928, in Hong Kong.
His family later settled in their ancestral village of Ladian in Gujrat district before the creation of Pakistan. He joined the Pakistan Military Academy on January 21, 1948, and quickly distinguished himself as an outstanding cadet.
At the passing-out parade of the Academy’s first regular course in 1950, he was declared Best Cadet. He also received the Sword of Honour and Norman Gold Medal for his strong performance.
Major Aziz Bhatti later travelled to Canada in 1952 for advanced military training.
He served as a General Staff Officer in Jhelum and Kohat from 1957 to 1959. He was then associated with the Punjab Regiment from 1960 to 1962 and the Infantry School in Quetta from 1962 to 1964.
Heroic defence of Burki sector
Major Aziz Bhatti’s most important chapter in military history came during the 1965 war.
As a Company Commander in the Burki sector near Lahore, he remained with his troops despite repeated enemy attacks. He helped organise the defence of the BRB Canal and stayed at a forward position to monitor enemy movements.
For five days and five nights, he continued to lead the defence despite heavy pressure and difficult conditions. The Armed Forces say his determined resistance helped stop the enemy’s advance in the area. His actions later became a lasting symbol of courage, duty and sacrifice.
Major Aziz Bhatti makes the ultimate sacrifice
On September 12, 1965, Major Aziz Bhatti was observing enemy movements near the canal when the area came under heavy shelling. He continued performing his duty despite the danger.
He was eventually struck in the chest by enemy fire and embraced martyrdom while defending the country. His sacrifice during the 1965 war made him one of the most recognised heroes of Pakistan’s military history.
Nishan-e-Haider awarded for supreme sacrifice
In recognition of his exceptional bravery, Major Aziz Bhatti was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award.
The honour recognised his courage, leadership and sacrifice during the defence of Lahore. His name has since remained closely associated with the defence of the country and the sacrifices made by Pakistani soldiers during the 1965 war.
Military leadership pays tribute
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, and General Syed Aamer Raza, Commander National Strategic Command, paid tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti on behalf of the Armed Forces.

The military leadership said his devotion to duty, courage and sacrifice remained an inspiration for future generations. The Armed Forces also reaffirmed their commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and security with the same determination and spirit of sacrifice associated with Major Aziz Bhatti.
President Zardari honours Major Aziz Bhatti
President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti on his 61st martyrdom anniversary.
The president said the soldier had made his name immortal by sacrificing his life while defending the country during the 1965 war. He described Major Aziz Bhatti’s sacrifice as an example of commitment to national defence and said his courage remained a source of pride for the nation.
President Zardari also said the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs would continue to be remembered and would serve as a source of guidance for younger generations.
Nation remembers his sacrifice
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also paid tribute to Major Aziz Bhatti, recalling his five-day and five-night defence of the Burki sector near Lahore.
He said the martyr’s bravery and sacrifice represented an important chapter in Pakistan’s history and would continue to inspire future generations. He also highlighted the Nishan-e-Haider awarded to Major Aziz Bhatti for his extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice.
Tributes continue on martyrdom anniversary
On the occasion, floral wreaths are being laid at Major Aziz Bhatti’s final resting place, and prayers are being offered in his memory.
The anniversary provides an opportunity to remember not only Major Aziz Bhatti but also the soldiers who lost their lives while defending Pakistan. His story remains particularly significant because of the difficult circumstances in which he continued to perform his duty.
