LPG price slashed, but consumers still waiting for relief
Consumers across Pakistan are still waiting for relief despite a significant cut in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, as retailers say existing stock purchased at older rates cannot be sold immediately at the new price.
Following the latest revision, the price of LPG has been reduced by Rs 67.33 per kilogram, bringing the new official rate down to Rs 241.43 per kilogram. The reduction comes shortly after a decrease in petroleum product prices, offering hope for lower household and transport costs.
The revised pricing has also reduced the cost of a standard 11.8 kg domestic LPG cylinder by Rs 794.50, making it more affordable for households that rely on LPG for cooking and heating.
However, LPG shopkeepers say they are unable to pass on the price cut immediately because their current inventory was purchased at the previous, higher rates. They argue that selling existing stock at the new price would result in financial losses.
Meanwhile, rickshaw drivers have welcomed the reduction and urged transport operators to lower fares in line with the cheaper fuel costs. They also called on authorities to take strict action against retailers found charging prices above the officially notified rates.
Consumers have expressed frustration over the delay in receiving the benefit of the price reduction, saying official price cuts should be implemented without unnecessary delays.
Market analysts believe the latest reduction in LPG prices could help ease household expenses and transportation costs if retailers quickly adjust their selling prices and authorities ensure effective enforcement of the revised rates.
