Lahore traffic wardens are now required to obtain prior permission from the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) before registering any case against citizens, 24News reported.
According to police sources, the concerned DSP must be informed and formal approval secured before filing cases for any traffic violation. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed has officially briefed all City Traffic Police wardens about the new directive.=
The policy aims to ensure accountability and reduce complaints from citizens regarding arbitrary or excessive case registration by traffic wardens. In recent months, multiple complaints had emerged over the large number of traffic cases being filed against drivers, often causing public frustration.
Traffic police continue to monitor and register violations such as one-wheeling, driving the wrong way on one-way streets, driving without a valid license, commercial vehicles operating without fitness certificates, and vehicles using non-standard number plates.

Officials said that the new procedure does not prevent traffic enforcement but introduces an extra layer of oversight to ensure cases are justified. The DSP’s approval will serve as a check against misuse of authority and help maintain transparency in the registration process.
Wardens have been instructed to strictly follow the chain of command and document each case submission to the DSP. The move is expected to improve citizen trust in traffic enforcement while maintaining road safety.
Police have emphasized that while approvals are now mandatory, urgent violations that pose immediate risk can still be addressed, with post-facto reporting to the DSP. The directive is part of ongoing reforms by the Lahore Traffic Police to balance strict enforcement with fairness and accountability.
