(Web Desk): Punjab issues strict Lahore Basant SOPs to regulate kite flying and prevent injuries and deaths.

The Punjab government has issued detailed Lahore Basant SOPs to regulate kite flying and reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities linked to the festival. The rules aim to promote safety and strict enforcement.

Approved kite sizes defined

According to the official notification, only specific kites will be allowed during Basant. A “Patang” kite may have a maximum width of 35 inches and a length of up to 30 inches. A “Gudda” kite is permitted with a width of up to 40 inches and a length of 34 inches. Any kite beyond these limits will be illegal.

Strict rules for kite string

The Punjab government has also set clear standards for kite string. Only cotton dor will be allowed. The string must have no more than nine strands and a minimum count of 28. Coated maanjha is allowed only if it meets a minimum mesh size of 350.

The dor must be wound in a “pinna” and carry a QR code for identification. This step will help authorities trace violations.

Dangerous materials banned

The SOPs strictly ban charkhi-based dor and all metallic, chemical, or glass-coated strings. These materials have caused serious injuries and deaths in past Basant seasons. The sale, storage, or use of banned dor will trigger legal action.

Enforcement and penalties

Authorities have attached visual guides to the SOPs to clarify approved and banned items. Citizens have been warned to follow the kite flying rules strictly. Violations may lead to heavy fines, confiscation, and criminal charges.

Officials say the Lahore Basant SOPs focus on safety while allowing controlled celebration.
