KP plans motorway BRT to link Peshawar with four districts
Feasibility study to determine project details
The Transport Department has decided to initiate a feasibility study for the proposed project. The study will examine the possible routes, estimated cost, and locations where stations could be established.
It will also help authorities determine the technical and operational requirements for running BRT-style buses between Peshawar and other districts. Officials said the final cost, routes, stations, and other major details would be determined after the feasibility study is completed.
Motorway route seen as an easier option
Officials believe operating BRT-style buses on the motorway could be easier than using the GT Road. The motorway could provide a faster and more direct route for buses travelling between Peshawar and the surrounding districts.
However, the feasibility study will determine how the proposed service can operate safely and efficiently on the selected routes. The study will also help authorities assess passenger demand and identify suitable locations for stations and other facilities.
Service could benefit thousands of passengers
The proposed inter-district BRT service is expected to provide daily transport facilities to thousands of passengers. People who regularly travel between Peshawar and Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi or Charsadda could benefit from a more organised public transport option.
The service could particularly help daily commuters, students, employees and other passengers travelling between these districts for work, education or business. Improved public transport could also reduce dependence on private vehicles and less organised transport options.
Modern transport link planned between districts
The main objective of the project is to establish a modern and efficient transport link between Peshawar and adjoining districts. The government is examining whether the BRT-style model can be expanded beyond the city to serve passengers travelling longer distances.

If the proposal proves feasible, it could create a new model for inter-district public transport in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project is still at the planning stage, and no final decision on its launch, cost or timeline has yet been announced.
Routes and stations yet to be finalised
The feasibility study will play a key role in deciding how the proposed service will operate. Authorities will examine which motorway routes can be used and where passengers can access the service.
The study is also expected to identify suitable locations for stations and assess the infrastructure needed to support the new bus network. Officials will finalise the project’s technical details after reviewing the study’s findings.
What the proposed BRT service could mean
If approved and implemented, the motorway-based BRT-style service could make daily travel between Peshawar and nearby districts more convenient. A structured bus network could offer passengers a more predictable and organised public transport option.
However, the project will depend on the findings of the feasibility study, including its cost, passenger demand and operational requirements. The government will need to finalise these details before announcing a formal launch plan.
