(Web Desk): A massive fire at Gul Plaza on Karachi’s MA Jinnah Road has killed 10 people, including a firefighter, injured dozens, and left the building at risk of collapse.

A devastating third-degree fire that broke out at Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi late last night remains largely uncontrolled, despite extensive firefighting efforts. At least 10 people, including a firefighter, have lost their lives, while over 30 others have been injured, with 11 reported in critical condition, according to rescue officials.

Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue teams struggle to access all areas of the severely damaged commercial building.

Building Structure at Risk of Total Collapse

The fire has severely weakened the structure of Gul Plaza, causing visible cracks and the collapse of multiple sections, including the rear portion. Officials warn that the entire building could collapse at any moment due to prolonged exposure to intense heat.

Rescue 1122 Sindh stated that around 77% of the fire has been brought under control, but firefighting operations continue amid extreme danger.

Victims Identified, Firefighter Martyred

Among the deceased are Kashif (40), Faraz (55), Aamir (30), Aamir (28), and one unidentified individual. The martyred firefighter has been identified as Furqan Ali, who lost his life during rescue operations when part of the building collapsed.

Details of the Plaza and Fire Spread

Gul Plaza housed over 1,200 shops in a three-storey structure, selling clothing, crockery, perfumes, cosmetics, electronics, toys, and other goods.
The ground and mezzanine floors have been completely gutted, while the fire continues to burn on the upper two floors.

The presence of highly flammable materials and chemicals inside shops significantly intensified the blaze.

Massive Firefighting and Rescue Operation Underway

Fire tenders from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Rescue 1122, Pakistan Navy, and the Pakistan Airports Authority are part of the operation.
In total, over 22 fire tenders and multiple snorkels have been deployed, with assistance from Sindh Rangers to manage crowds, maintain traffic flow, and secure the area.

Major Challenges Faced by Rescue Teams

Rescue officials reported severe operational challenges, including:

  • No ventilation or open windows, causing heavy smoke buildup
  • Lack of emergency exits
  • Water shortages, forcing reliance on distant hydrants
  • Large crowds, delaying the movement of emergency vehicles

Emergency water supply was activated at NIPA and Safoora hydrants to support firefighting efforts.

Officials’ Statements

Rescue 1122 Sindh CEO Dr Abid Jalal said the first emergency call was received at 10:38 pm, prompting immediate deployment. He confirmed the fire’s intensity was worsened by chemical stock inside shops, and warned that cooling operations could take two to three days after the fire is fully extinguished.

Karachi Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan described the incident as a third-degree fire, stating that while the blaze was initially controlled, a sudden building collapse caused an explosion, reigniting the fire and claiming a firefighter’s life. Cooling may take three to four days, he added.

Government Response and Political Reactions

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed the Sindh Chief Minister and Karachi Mayor to use all available resources. He also ordered a transparent investigation to determine the cause and prevent future incidents.

The Sindh Home Minister took notice of the fire, instructing authorities to prevent further spread, identify negligence, and ensure safe evacuation routes.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the city stands with the affected families and ordered all municipal departments to remain on high alert.

Investigation Ordered

Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed confirmed that federal and provincial agencies, including the Pakistan Navy and KMC, are actively engaged. She stressed that accountability will follow once the emergency phase concludes, especially regarding blocked exits and safety violations.
