(Web Desk): A massive fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza shopping mall leaves 5 dead and over 20 injured, as rescue teams struggle to contain flames amid building collapse fears.

Karachi’s bustling Gul Plaza shopping mall was engulfed in a devastating fire late Saturday night, leaving five dead and over 20 injured, with 11 in critical condition, officials confirmed. Rescue and firefighting teams battled the blaze for more than 10 hours, but thick smoke, intense heat, and flammable goods hampered containment efforts.

According to initial reports, the fire likely originated from ground-floor shops due to a short circuit before rapidly spreading across the 1989-built structure, which houses approximately 1,200 shops selling crockery, clothing, cosmetics, electrical appliances, and perfumes. A portion of the building collapsed under the heat, further endangering trapped victims and firefighters, including one missing personnel named Farqan.

Rescue Efforts and Emergency Response

Multiple fire tenders and rescue teams from different departments were deployed, but thick smoke and extreme temperatures made operations challenging. Rescue 1122 and Edhi Foundation teams assisted in evacuating survivors, while Sindh Rangers secured the site, managed traffic, and protected civilians from potential hazards.

 Impact on Surroundings

The fire’s effects extended to nearby Rampa Plaza, filling it with smoke and causing difficulties for residents and traders. Emergency services advised nearby areas to remain evacuated until the blaze is fully contained.

Government Reaction

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed grave concern, ordering immediate acceleration of rescue and relief operations, demanding an urgent report on the cause of the fire, and ensuring full government support for affected traders. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar instructed traffic diversion and a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents.

Preliminary Findings

Initial investigations indicate no proper emergency exits in the decades-old building, which exacerbated casualties. Authorities continue to review building records and assess safety compliance while investigating the cause of the fire.

Authorities warned that despite partial containment, the situation remains extremely dangerous, with more victims potentially trapped inside, urging the public to avoid the area.
