First mass transit train launched in Quetta

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti have formally inaugurated the Jinnah Peoples Train, marking the province’s first mass transit train service. The service will connect Quetta with surrounding areas and provide commuters with an affordable, comfortable and reliable transport option.

The project was completed through cooperation between the Balochistan government and Pakistan Railways. Under the initiative, the 32-kilometre railway track between Sariab and Kuchlak was upgraded and restored at a cost of around Rs3 billion within a record 120 days.

Seven stations to serve commuters

The Jinnah Peoples Train will stop at seven stations, including Kuchlak, Baleli, Sheikh Manda, GOR Halt, Quetta, Lor Kariz Halt and Sariab. Several stations along the route were also renovated, with passenger facilities, electrical systems, furniture and other infrastructure improved.

New turntables were installed at Sariab and Kuchlak, while GOR Halt was rebuilt with solar and electrical facilities. The train coaches were manufactured at Pakistan Railways’ Carriage Factory in Islamabad within four months.

Bugti said the service would benefit students, employees, traders, women, children and workers by improving daily connectivity. Abbasi described the launch as part of efforts to expand public transport facilities in Balochistan.
