(Web Desk): HEC AI course mandatory policy 2026 makes Artificial Intelligence a compulsory three-credit subject in all undergraduate and postgraduate programs nationwide.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has made it mandatory for all public and private universities across the country to introduce a three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence (AI) course at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels from the academic session 2026.

In an official notification issued by HEC Executive Director Dr. Zia ul Haq to vice chancellors and heads of degree-awarding institutes, universities have been directed to integrate AI education into every degree program starting this year.

AI Course to Be Implemented from 2026 Academic Session

According to the HEC directive, the compulsory AI course will be introduced in all undergraduate and postgraduate programs beginning in the 2026 academic year. The three-credit-hour course can be offered as:

  • An elective subject
  • An interdisciplinary course
  • A relevant subject within the program structure

However, it must include core AI concepts and foundational knowledge.

Why HEC Made AI Course Mandatory

HEC emphasized that Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the 21st-century global landscape, impacting sectors such as education, healthcare, economy, governance, and administration.

The commission stated that AI is emerging as a powerful force driving innovation worldwide. Therefore, Pakistan’s higher education system must equip students with the skills to use AI responsibly and ethically to stay competitive in the global digital economy.

Focus on Ethical and Responsible AI Use

The HEC has underlined the importance of teaching students not only technical AI skills but also ethical considerations and responsible usage. The move aims to prepare graduates for future technological challenges while aligning Pakistan’s education system with global standards.

With this policy, Pakistan joins the growing list of countries integrating Artificial Intelligence education into mainstream university curricula.
