The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution firmly opposing any move to create a separate ‘Karachi province’. The House declared Karachi an “integral part” of Sindh and rejected all calls for division.
Murad Ali Shah tabled the resolution and condemned “divisive statements calling for the breakup of Sindh or the separation of Karachi”. Speaking in the assembly, he said that dividing Sindh or separating Karachi goes against history, the Constitution, democratic values and the feelings of the people.
"This House unequivocally condemns and rejects any conspiracy aimed at division of Sindh or creation of [a] separate province comprising Karachi," he stated.
He further declared that the metropolis "is, and shall forever remain, an integral and inseparable of Sindh". In a message shared from his official X account, he said Sindh’s unity is sacred and Karachi is inseparable from the province.

The resolution came after Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan demanded that Karachi be declared a federal territory under Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution. The demand was raised by Mustafa Kamal following the tragic fire at Gul Plaza in Karachi.
The deadly blaze killed at least 73 people and affected around 1,200 shops, raising serious questions about governance and safety. Later, Farooq Sattar asked Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to remove key provincial officials over the tragedy and said Karachi should be handed to the Centre if the provincial government fails to perform.
The debate shows deep political tension over Karachi’s future. The assembly’s strong message may calm fears for now. But differences between parties remain. If issues like governance and safety are not addressed, the controversy could rise again.
