Govt puts restrictions on employees’ social media use
New restrictions announced
The Establishment Division briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat about the new framework for regulating the online and media activities of government employees.
Under the latest government social media rules, officials will not be allowed to use their official positions for personal publicity or self-promotion.
They will also be required to obtain proper authorisation before sharing government-related information publicly.
The government says the move is aimed at preventing the misuse of official positions and limiting the unauthorised release of official or confidential information.
Monitoring system being established
A dedicated monitoring cell is also being established to check whether employees follow the new requirements.
The cell will oversee compliance and identify activities that may violate official rules.
The move comes as government employees social media use has increased across platforms such as Facebook, X, YouTube and TikTok.

Existing rules also remain in place
Government employees were already subject to restrictions on media appearances and sharing official information.
Under existing instructions, public servants need permission before participating in media programmes.
They are also prohibited from sharing official or confidential information without approval.
The latest social media restrictions Pakistan framework is expected to strengthen enforcement of these earlier instructions.
Authorities want employees to ensure that their online content does not conflict with their professional duties or the government’s code of conduct.
Personal publicity comes under focus
One of the key concerns is the use of official positions for personal branding.
Employees will not be allowed to use government titles or roles to promote themselves or gain personal publicity.
The issue has become more important because government employees social media activity can quickly reach large audiences.
Officials will therefore need to be careful when publishing posts, videos or statements connected to government work.
Authorisation may be required before information related to official matters is shared publicly.
Why the rules matter
The government says the government social media rules are intended to protect sensitive information and maintain discipline among public servants.
The authorities are also concerned that unauthorised statements can create confusion or reveal information that has not been officially released.
The new monitoring cell is expected to improve oversight and ensure that employees follow the required procedures.
