CM Maryam orders high alert over heatwave, urban flooding risks
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert as the province prepares for possible heatwaves, urban flooding and monsoon-related emergencies in the coming months.
Chairing a meeting on monsoon preparedness, the chief minister warned that temperatures could rise sharply during July, August and September. She said some cities may experience temperatures of up to 52 degrees Celsius, while above-normal rainfall is also forecast for parts of the province.
Maryam Nawaz said climate change is now a serious reality that requires timely planning. She added that the government is taking proactive measures to minimise the impact of extreme weather. She said the early warning system has been fully activated to provide timely weather forecasts and strengthen emergency response during heavy rainfall and other weather-related incidents.
The chief minister directed all departments to remain fully prepared for possible flooding and instructed rescue and emergency services to continue conducting mock exercises to strengthen disaster response capabilities.
She said the government has incorporated lessons learned from last year’s devastating floods into its current planning. Authorities have also been directed to ensure adequate fodder supplies for livestock during any emergency.

Maryam Nawaz further instructed officials to issue timely public advisories on heatwaves and changing weather conditions. She urged citizens, especially elderly people, women, and children, to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during periods of extreme heat.
The chief minister said Punjab has completed all necessary arrangements to deal with heatwave conditions. She also claimed that rainwater is drained promptly across the province. Without naming any other province, she remarked that floodwater remains stagnant elsewhere.
Referring to the recent Kahna tragedy, Maryam Nawaz announced that the “Apna Ghar, Mehfooz Ghar” programme has been launched to help prevent similar incidents. Under the initiative, residents across Punjab can apply for interest-free loans of up to Rs1,000,000 to improve the safety of their homes.
