Basant 2027 takes surprise turn as Punjab changes festival plan
Punjab changes Basant 2027 schedule
Punjab has changed the Basant 2027 schedule, replacing the earlier three-day March plan with a 10-day festival in Lahore. The revised celebrations will run from January 29 to February 7, 2027, according to the latest government announcement.
The change comes after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz initially announced that Basant would be held from March 12 to 14, 2027. The March dates were officially announced in August and were also listed by the Lahore district administration.
March plan replaced by extended festival
The latest decision means the earlier three-day March schedule is no longer the current plan. The new 10-day programme is being presented as a celebration of Lahore’s cultural heritage and traditional identity.
The festival will, however, have a one-day break on February 5 to observe Kashmir Solidarity Day. This means kite-flying celebrations will not continue on that day.
Basant returned to Lahore in February 2026 after a long gap, with the revival attracting significant public attention. Authorities are now expected to focus heavily on safety arrangements during the extended 2027 celebrations.
Safety remains a major concern
The Punjab government has directed relevant authorities to make stronger arrangements for public safety and convenience. Officials are also expected to enforce regulations concerning kite-flying materials and dangerous strings.
The repeated changes to the Basant 2027 schedule had created uncertainty among residents, kite makers and businesses. The latest 10-day schedule now appears to be the government’s current plan, although authorities may issue further instructions regarding specific arrangements.
