Basant 2026 has triggered unprecedented commercial activity in Lahore, with the sale of kites and related accessories crossing a historic Rs34 billion mark within just two days, according to the Kite Flying Association.
The association revealed that on the first day alone, sales touched Rs16 billion, followed by an even stronger Rs18 billion on the second day, setting a new benchmark for the traditional festival’s economic footprint.
Officials said that the surge was driven by massive demand for kites, gudda-guddi (kite spools), and punnay (kite paper) as citizens prepared enthusiastically for the long-awaited Basant celebrations.

On the second day, over 600,000 kites and gudda-guddies were sold across Lahore, while more than 15,000 bundles of punnay were purchased by traders and consumers. Markets across the city witnessed heavy footfall, with traders reporting shortages of popular kite designs and colors.
The Kite Flying Association stated that Basant has once again proven to be a major seasonal economic driver, supporting thousands of small vendors, manufacturers, and daily wage workers linked to the kite industry.
Experts believe the revival of regulated Basant activities has helped formalize the market, boosting transparency and legal trade while preserving Lahore’s cultural heritage.
